Where your healing journey unfolds

You are not out of options

If standard antidepressants haven’t worked, you’re not alone, and you’re not stuck. Roughly one in three people with depression don’t find relief from conventional medication.1 Ketamine works through a different pathway in the brain, and for many people it brings relief in days rather than weeks.2

The basics

What is ketamine therapy?

Ketamine is a non-opioid medication that has been used in operating rooms and emergency departments for more than 50 years.3 It is commonly used to provide sedation and pain relief during procedures such as fracture reduction in children because it generally preserves spontaneous breathing and protective airway reflexes.

At low, sub-anesthetic doses, ketamine affects the brain’s glutamate system, a different target from traditional antidepressants. Research suggests that it promotes neuroplasticity and helps strengthen or form new connections between brain cells.2

Although ketamine is not FDA-approved for depression, it has been evaluated in more than 50 clinical studies, with additional research ongoing. The evidence supports its rapid, short-term effectiveness and favorable safety profile when administered under medical supervision. This use is considered off-label, meaning an established medication is prescribed for a purpose beyond its FDA-approved indication, a common and legally permitted practice in medicine.

The evidence

How well does ketamine work?

71% Response rate. In one clinical study, approximately 71% of patients with treatment-resistant depression experienced at least a 50% reduction in symptoms after a series of six IV ketamine infusions.7
54% Improved in real-world care. In a study of 537 patients receiving four to eight IV ketamine infusions, approximately 54% experienced at least a 50% reduction in depression symptoms.8
63% Remission of suicidal thoughts. In a randomized clinical trial, 63% of patients receiving ketamine achieved remission of severe suicidal thoughts within three days, compared with approximately 32% receiving placebo.9

Results are based on published clinical studies and do not guarantee individual outcomes.

Questions

Frequently asked

Does ketamine therapy hurt?

You’ll feel a small pinch when the IV is placed, but the treatment itself isn’t painful. Some people feel temporarily dreamy or “floaty,” which fades after the session. You’re monitored the whole time.

What does it feel like?

At the doses we use, ketamine can create a temporary dreamlike or “dissociative” feeling of being detached from your body or surroundings. It’s expected and it fades as the medicine wears off. A member of our clinical team is with you throughout. More on what to expect →

How quickly might I feel a difference?

Many people notice changes within hours to days, faster than traditional antidepressants, which can take weeks.2 Everyone responds differently, which is why we track your progress closely.

Do you accept insurance?

Breakthrough Therapeutics is a self-pay practice. Insurance plans do not cover ketamine treatment for mental health conditions, so payment is handled directly at the time of service.
